NAIROBI, KENYA – September 17, 2025 – The Natural Resource Women Platform (NRWP) is proud to announce its participation in the Regional Consultation on the UN Tax Convention and Ending Austerity, a pivotal three-day event bringing together African feminist movements, activists, and policy experts. The consultation, which runs from September 17–19, is a key part of a broader continental push to ensure Africa has a strong, unified voice in shaping global tax reform and developing alternatives to harmful austerity measures.
For Liberia, these discussions are more urgent than ever. Despite the nation’s rich natural resources, billions are lost each year through harmful tax incentives, corporate profit shifting, and illicit financial flows. At the same time, austerity measures, often driven by debt and international financial institutions, have weakened critical health, education, and social protection systems. This burden disproportionately affects women, who face higher living costs, reduced access to essential services, and increased unpaid care work.
At the consultation, NRWP is focusing on three key areas:
- Elevating the voices of grassroots women: Ensuring the realities of women from Liberia’s mining and agricultural communities are at the forefront of the discussion.
- Advocating for feminist tax justice: Pushing for fair, progressive taxes that can finance essential services and reduce inequalities.
- Calling for African leadership: Demanding that global tax rules established under the new UN Tax Convention reflect the lived realities of women and communities in the Global South.

“We believe the UN Tax Convention is a historic opportunity to shift power from institutions that have failed Africa to a fairer, more inclusive system,” said Radiatu H.S Kahnplaye. “For us, tax justice isn’t just about numbers, it’s about justice for women and communities who deserve access to healthcare, education, and livelihoods without the crushing burden of austerity.”
By participating in this consultation, NRWP is ensuring that the voices of Liberian women are heard and recognized in shaping Africa’s collective vision for global fiscal justice.
