Natural Resource Women Platform Commemorates International Day of Plant Health 2026

Theme: “Plant Biosecurity for Food Security”

The Natural Resource Women Platform (NRWP) joins the global community to commemorate the International Day of Plant Health, observed on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, with the theme “Plant Biosecurity for Food Security.”

This observance is an important reminder of the critical role plants play in sustaining life, supporting livelihoods, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring food security. Across the world, healthy plants remain the foundation of agriculture, environmental sustainability, economic growth, and human survival.

In many rural communities, declining soil fertility, shifting weather patterns, plant diseases, pests, and limited access to agricultural support services continue to exacerbate food insecurity and economic hardship, especially for women and smallholder farmers. Protecting plant health is therefore essential not only for agriculture but also for community survival, resilience, and sustainable development.

As an organization committed to environmental sustainability, women’s empowerment, and natural resource governance, NRWP recognizes that safeguarding plant health is essential to building resilient communities and securing the future of food systems. Healthy plants directly contribute to poverty reduction, improved nutrition, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development.

Women’s Indigenous knowledge and traditional farming practices continue to play a vital role in preserving local seed systems, protecting biodiversity, improving soil health, and strengthening food sovereignty within communities. Supporting women farmers is therefore critical to achieving long-term environmental sustainability and food security.

In commemorating this important day, NRWP calls on government institutions, environmental stakeholders, development partners, community leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations to strengthen collective efforts to advance plant protection and sustainable agriculture. Increased investment in environmental education, plant disease prevention, seed preservation, soil restoration, and support for rural women farmers is necessary to safeguard food security and protect future generations.

NRWP also encourages stronger support for agroecology, community-based adaptation, Indigenous seed preservation, and environmentally sustainable practices, including tree planting, proper land management, sustainable farming, and biodiversity conservation. These actions are essential to promoting healthier ecosystems, more resilient agricultural systems, and stronger community livelihoods.

As the world marks the International Day of Plant Health 2026, NRWP reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection, to supporting women in agriculture, and to amplifying community voices in the fight against hunger, environmental degradation, and climate vulnerability.

Protecting plant health is not only an agricultural responsibility but also a collective duty to preserve life, sustain livelihoods, and secure a healthier future for all.
