Nine in ten farmers surveyed say climate change has made it harder to feed their families, new NRWP report finds

Women farmers in six Liberian counties are already living with climate change and adapting with little support, according to From Fields to Frontlines, a new report launched today by the Natural Resource Women Platform (NRWP).

NRWP surveyed 124 smallholder farmers, 115 of them women, in Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, Margibi, Grand Bassa, Nimba and Bong between June 2024 and October 2025. The findings show:

  • 93% say climate change has worsened their food security, and 87% have lost livelihoods.
  • 83% report crops damaged by pests, and only 7 of 123 use improved seed.
  • 59% farm together through traditional Koo groups, but only 14% belong to a formal cooperative, where most climate finance is aimed.
  • 97% of women asked (71 of 73) had never heard of carbon markets.

“Before, there was a special time for rain and sun. But now, when it is expected to rain, the sun will shine.” — Woman farmer, Bong County

“Women farmers are on the frontline of climate change in Liberia,” said Radiatu H. S. Kahnplaye, Lead Coordinator and Policy Advisor at NRWP. “Liberia’s NDC 3.0 makes real promises to women. Now those promises must be costed, funded, and reach women in the communities. Climate solutions that do not center women farmers will fail.”

NRWP calls on the Government of Liberia and partners to:

  1. Cost the NDC 3.0 gender commitments and report on them every year.
  2. Provide basic tools and inputs for women farmers.
  3. Treat pest and wildlife control as climate adaptation.
  4. Support livelihoods that end dependence on charcoal.
  5. Bring training, information, and simple finance to women’s groups.

NRWP will take these findings to COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, in November 2026, to share them with negotiators, partners and women’s rights networks.
